Peptitler (Grekçe: πεπτίδια; “değersiz sindirilebilirler”) teşhismlanmış bir düzende, α-amino asitlerin birbirine sargılanmasıyla oluşan güdük polimerlerdir.[1] Bir amino asit sözıntısı ile başkası arasındaki bağ bir “amit bağ” yahut peptit bağı olarak bilinir.[1]
Tetrapeptit (Oligopeptit)
Proteinler polipeptit molekülleridir (yahut çok sayıda polipeptit zir birimi barındırır). Kök ayrım peptitlerin güdük, polipeptitlerin/proteinlerin ise uzun olmasıdır.[1]
Protein sentezi sırasında her amino asit, diğer amino asite geceli gündüzlü, kırılmayan bir polimer olan polipeptid zincirleriyle sargılanır. Polipeptid kuruluşsına sertlan amino asitlerin her biri kuruluşya peptid sargılarıyla sargılanır. Peptid bağının oluşumu sırasında amino asitlerden birinin amino grubu ile diğerinin karboksil grubu, aradan bir kez çıkması sonucu birleşirler.[1]
Yaklaşık bir polipeptit zinciri 450 amino asitten oluşur.[1] Bilindik en uzun polipeptit, takribî 27,000 amino asitten oluşan, kas dokusunda kâin “titin”dir. Polipeptid zincirine sertlan amino asitlere sözıntı (residue) adı verilir.[1] Zincirin bir ucundaki sözıntı, bağ yapmamış, muaf amino grubu barındırır ve N ucu olarak adlandırılır. Aynı şekilde zincirin diğer ucundaki muaf α-karboksil grubu olan sözıntıevet C ucu adı verilir.
